BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS. WHY don’t doctors FIRST treat women w/REPEAT MISCARRIAGES with progesterone therapy
Tinkerbell asked:
instead of conducting invasive surgeries (i.e., laparoscopies, etc.) and high fallutin reproductive technologies (i.e., IUI, IVF, etc.), esp. if chances are they will miscarriage again?
And yes, this issue is predominant among “advanced maternal age” (i.e., 38 years and older) but I think that luteal phase deficiency is an equal opportunity disorder.
And yes, I’m well aware of the controversy of prescribing progesterone post-ovulation, and the whole chicken/egg debate over whether the fault is with the woman’s corpus luteum and her “old eggs” or if INSTEAD it might be a legitimate hormone issue; i.e., perimenopause and a failure of the body to produce sufficient progesterone post-ovulation to support implantation of the products of conception.
I’m just wondering WHY the ob/gyn’s aren’t at least TRYING to employ progesterone BEFORE costly and invasive alternatives?
Feel free to share your success so others become aware of their fertility and reproductive CHOICES. Thank you

Well I can’t speak to your entire issue because my Dr. did in fact take my word that my luteal phase was 8-9 days and simply prescribed the progesterone. He did not wait for me to actually m/c, or lecture me about my advanced age (43) or insist on any invasive testing, he asked me how far I wanted to take this and then offered a plan to suit my wishes….
My advice is to find a Dr. that you like and can trust, ask questions, ask more questions…do your own research and be proactive on your own behalf. If at any time you feel you are not getting good advice go find another Dr.
I’m sorry you are clearly hurt angry and frustrated…I wish you the best of luck with your situation.
Honestly I dont think it has anything to do with old eggs and everything to do with the human body!! I am 21 years old and was trying to concieve for so long, when it finally happened I was so excited! 2 months later I miscarried with no none reason why? Well this pregnancy I insisted on progesterone. I wasnt going home without it!! I was given prometrium and I think it helped out sooo much!! I really cant say enough? Why wont DR’s give it out it is almost like you have to beg for it! Anyways, I am now 6 months pregnant and am so happy I begged for it!!
There are so much debate on the issue of progesterone. But, most reproductive endocrinologist use progesterone supplementation such as progesterone in oil injections or suppositories or oral progesterone during IVF or IUI cycles. So, obviously it does help and is necessary. I really think progesterone supplemenation is needed for many women, especially those who have conceived naturally and have history of miscarriages. I think if you seek the advice of a RE rather than a OB/gyn, you will have more success.
