Is it a must to take Hormone Replacement Therapy, or does a woman have the option of refusing to do so?

serialmom12 asked:

I’m talking about taking pills or a patch for menopause symptoms.
A friend of mine took Premarin which helped her, but it ended up causing a huge fibroid because she was on it for too long.
My family history risk of cancer is much higher than the normal womans, so I want to avoid taking hormones (should I ever need to,) at all costs. I’d much prefer to do things the natural way w/o any drugs.

It is YOUR health you certainly can refuse , YET I would seek a variety of opinions, first.

There is no one FORCING you to take a pill or shot. Patient compliance is usually the biggest concern among healthcare workers when dealing with treatment options. However, when deciding to become NON-compliant with HRT, you need to look at what you might be heading towards. This discussion should include any party concerned and your PCP. Also, a clarifying point is needed here…what HRT are you referring to specifically?

My grandma never took it. She lived into her 90’s but she was pretty hunched over. My mom took it for some years then stopped. She may be back on it, for all I know.

I’ll probably take it. I take the pill now to control pre-menopause and endometriosis.

Of course you can refuse. I told you that after my hysterectomy they wanted me to take HRT and I refused because mine was Cancer related. No medical professional can force you to take medication…unless it is because you are causing harm to yourself or others and you are not.
There are natural ways w/o drugs and I am going down that path myself. I recently started going through the change at a young age because I had my hysterectomy at 25. It hasn’t been as bad as I thought and I’m dealing well. I’m glad I choose not to go the HRT route. I’ve had Cancer more than once and it isn’t worth it. Talk to your Dr and speak your mind. Your health care is in your hand as much as your Dr’s.
    Peace & Love :)
